What Is Baking Soda?
It is a salt used for baking on its own as well as in baking powder.
WHAT DOES IT CONTAIN & HOW IS IT MADE?
It contains a chemical compound Sodium Bicarbonate.
Sodium Chloride, ammonia and carbon dioxide are involved in a reaction in water called the Solvay Process which results in the end product of Sodium Bicarbonate.
Commercial quantities are also produced from Soda ash mined in the form of an ore Trona which is dissolved in water and treated with carbon dioxide and Sodium Bicarbonate precipitates as a solid.
It is also a component of mineral Natron and is found dissolved in many mineral springs.
HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM BAKING POWDER?
Baking soda is just Sodium Bicarbonate alone but Baking powder is a combination of Sodium Bicarbonate which is an alkaline salt 1 or 2 acid salts like cream of Tartar, calcium phosphate and citrate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium and calcium aluminium phosphate corn starch to keep it dry.
