Is Cheese Halal?

Cheese is a solid food made from milk of cow, goat, and other mammals; made by coagulating or clotting milk. This is achieved by first acidifying the milk with a bacterial culture and then adding Rennin an enzyme to coagulate the milk separating it into curds (solid) and whey (liquid) product.

If cheese is made from Rennet of animal origin (See E-Numbers Section; Other common ingredients of animal origin) which has not been slaughtered in the Islamic way or genetically modified Rennet from a similar animal it is Not Halaal.

But Cheese made from Rennet of plant, microbial or fungal origin is Halaal as long as no non Halaal animal product has been introduced within it.

For more information on Halal & Haram please go to the required section and you can find answers to a wide variety of questions that you may have.
